At Busted Knuckles Cleaning, our job is to make your life easier by taking care of the dirt, dust, and grime. We’re experts at finding smart, efficient solutions for the toughest jobs. But that problem-solving mindset doesn’t stop when we put away the sponges and vacuums.
A well-run home is about more than just being clean—it’s about everything working smoothly. We believe in getting things done right, whether it’s scrubbing a floor or tackling one of life’s little everyday annoyances. So today, we’re sharing a few of our favorite non-cleaning life hacks straight from our own toolboxes.
1. The Stripped Screw Savior
The Problem: You’re one screw away from finishing a project, and the screwdriver slips. Now the screw head is stripped, and your driver has nothing to grip. It’s stuck.
The Hack: Use a Rubber Band.
This is a classic trick that works wonders.
- Place a wide rubber band flat over the top of the stripped screw head.
- Press your screwdriver firmly into the screw head through the rubber band.
- Turn the screwdriver slowly and with firm, consistent pressure. The rubber band will fill in the stripped gaps, giving the screwdriver the extra grip it needs to bite into the metal and turn the screw.
2. The Stubborn Jar Opener
The Problem: The new jar of pickles or pasta sauce is sealed with the force of a thousand suns. You’ve tried running it under hot water and tapping the lid, but it won’t budge.
The Hack: Duct Tape Leverage.
- Tear off a piece of duct tape about 12 inches long.
- Firmly press about 3-4 inches of the tape onto the side and top of the lid, leaving the rest as a “tail” pointing to the left (for right-handed opening).
- Smooth the tape down so it has a strong bond with the lid.
- Hold the jar securely with one hand and pull the duct tape tail firmly with the other. The tape acts like a perfect, high-friction handle, giving you the leverage you need to pop that seal.
3. The Squeaky Door Silencer
The Problem: A door hinge in your home shrieks every single time it’s opened or closed. It’s driving you crazy, but you don’t have a can of greasy lubricant on hand.
The Hack: A Little Bit of Cooking Spray.
- Grab a can of non-stick cooking spray (like Pam) from your kitchen.
- Place a paper towel under the squeaky hinge to catch any drips.
- Give the hinge a quick, short spray, aiming for the seams where the metal parts meet.
- Swing the door back and forth a few times to work the oil into the joint. The vegetable oil is an excellent short-term lubricant that will silence the squeak instantly.
4. The Tangle Teaser for Jewelry
The Problem: Your favorite necklace has tied itself into a tiny, impossible knot. Pulling on it only seems to make it worse.
The Hack: Two Pins and a Little Patience.
- Lay the knotted chain on a flat, well-lit surface.
- Get two straight pins, safety pins, or needles.
- Use the sharp points of the pins to gently pick and wiggle at the very center of the knot. Don’t try to pull the chain itself; focus only on loosening the knot from the inside out.
- Once you’ve created a small opening, you can continue to gently tease the knot apart until the chain is free.
5. The “Fresh-for-Weeks” Greens Keeper
The Problem: You buy a container of fresh salad greens, and two days later, they’ve turned into a slimy, wilted mess at the bottom of the container.
The Hack: The Paper Towel Trick.
- When you get your greens home, simply place a dry, folded paper towel on top of them inside the plastic clamshell or bag.
- Seal the container and store it in the fridge as usual.
- The paper towel will absorb the excess moisture that causes the leaves to rot and wilt quickly. You’ll be amazed at how this simple step can extend the life of your salad greens by a week or even more! Just replace the paper towel if it becomes damp.
